Hama Beads

Dragon & St George’s Day Hama Bead Patterns

These are images from various Hama Bead kits available at CraftMerrily. With grateful thanks to DKL (our first and still our favourite supplier) and Hama DK.

I got all behind this year and didn’t make any new ones of our own. I do love the Crocodile and Dragon boards though. Must do more for next year :)

Hama Bead Easter Bunnies

I can always rely on Maddy to come up with some brilliant Hama Bead patterns for me and she really went for it this time. Maddy, you are a complete star :)

We are just going to stick these together and hang them up now :)

Other offerings include Josie’s chicks

and her rabbit

Maddy’s adaptation of a chick breaking out of an egg from one of the Inspiration books

and a set of card topper designs, also by Maddy.

These join all our other free Easter Bead Patterns on BeadMerrily, a Hama Bead Design Resource from CraftMerrily

Easter Hama Bead Designs

Maddy made this last year, the day before Freddie was born. It’s kind of a funny thing, now. I love it though.

The girls have made various things over the last week, to help me out with some new pages on BeadMerrily, home of all things Hama Bead-y.This is from one of the Mini Bead books. Fran made it up in Midi Beads. It’s big, but it really works well. They’ve done other things too. I want to make Spring and Easter things to hang from the magnolia trees.

Over at BeadMerrily, I’ve put together some pages to inspire you:-

There are patterns of rabbits, ducks and chicks made by my friend Shazann.

A Rainbow Easter Display.

Lots of designs to do on the Egg Board. We’ve got a money saving Hama Bead bumper pack that includes the board.

Designs to make on the Flower Pegboard.

Some Hama Bead Easter and Spring Designs from around the internet.

Hama Bead Hot Air Balloon Picture

I made this last Summer on 4 square pegboards. It was pleasant to make something big, that required a certain amount of concentration. I enjoyed doing it.

I’ve finally got round to putting the pattern together into the bead designer; I’m putting them up on BeadMerrily, my Hama Bead Ideas website connected to CraftMerrily, our online craft shop.

Valentine Hama Bead Patterns

In the spirit of creativity, we’re back into Hama Beads and Amelie surpassed herself this week by creating these..

I think they are very beautiful and we each have our own one on our desk. Thank you sweetpea. She inspired me, so I’ve spent a bit of time putting all our current Valentine Hama Designs on BeadMerrily. That page includes links to several free to print designs and also a link to our free to download pdf of Heart Hama Designs. I hope you like it :) Obviously I’m hopelessly late for this years big and silly love fest, but they’ll be there for next year ;)

Chinese New Year Activities

In the midst of a busy week (and next week is the same) the girls and I thought we would revisit China and spend some time exploring Chinese New Year. We’ve not ‘done’ it for ages, certainly not so that Amelie or Josie would remember, so doing some finding out and crafting seemed a good idea.

I’m always a bit disappointed by what is on the web for this festival, in fact, I think the MuddlePuddle pages are still some of the best, though in urgent need of a do over. Still, we didn’t let that get in the way of a good art ad craft session, so I read bits out to them and they crafted. We resorted to our stock Hama beads and Fimo media, but we do have some paper things to do next week :) (And food, food always good!)

Amelie was very taken with the Chinese dragons she saw on Google images and made this, altering the shape subtly by taking a line off the bod of the dragon pegboard. Worked really well. The colours apparently only happened like that because we kept running out of beads  but it works beautifully I think.
Chinese Dragon in Hama Beads

Maddy did her own Chinese Dragon (Lion?)…

and then got interested in the Chinese ‘Year’ animals, so made a snake.
Year of the SNAKE!!!!

Fran had a go at a Chinese Flag in Hama Beads (tricky, i think I might try one of my own…)

Fran decided she wanted to make some “Year of the…£ plaques, so made a dog and a rabbit. Or possibly a rabbit and a dog. She wasn’t quite sure either ;)

I’d printed off some tangrams, and Fran and I got taken by the idea of making them in beads too. We each made an approximation of how they look in a square formation…

and then got quite fascinated by how hard it was to do perfectly on a grid (annoying blunt end triangles and wobbly, not perfect sides) and she started trying to make a set of pieces that would work perfectly as an actual set of tangrams. We haven’t actually concluded if that is a yes or no yet, the picture blow have some of her draft pieces and she’s still refining them. It’s been really interesting watching her try; reminds me of some GCSE maths projects I did at school. (I’d quite like to find some of those for her to try, I think she’d like them.)
Tangram Trials

Then there were some people in ‘Chinese’ outfits (at least I can say they had looked at traditional cultural colours ;) )

The craft of the day was probably these plaques, by Maddy. They had all really enjoyed working out what ‘year’ they were born in. Fran was very pleased to discover Freddie was also a tiger, like she is. The spent ages trying to see if they were like the animal and deciding if they believed it or not

Chinese year Animal Plaques
Maddy made these for each person – I think they are all, but especially the dragon and monkey, completely amazing. I’m jealous

Kandinsky Resource for Kids

You might remember that last summer, Zoe and I did some Kandinsky work with our children. The resulting project, with various ideas, got blogged here, among other places. It was a great way to try out various different artist materials.

It also inspired us to play with Hama Beads to recreate the famous Concentric Circles picture and I’ve finally got around to putting it together into a free downloadable file with some extra extension ideas. I hope you like. Let me know what you think, if you do look, as I’m planning a few more of this type of thing and feedback would be good.

The pattern ideas are very simple in this case and all look like variations on this…

Hopefully it will be useful to someone.

Thank you!
