Christmas Craft Light Tree & Glass Art
I love our light tree; I bought it last year and it amuses me to hang silly things on something otherwise intended to be ‘terribly tasteful’. I had though, this year, added two ornaments, two lovely birds I bought months ago, in memory of Freddie and that other missing child. Hard to believe only 2/3s of the children I should have are here
Unfortunately my girls smashed the blue one yesterday, causing much tears and distress from me and perhaps not quite enough apologising from the culprit. I temporarily left home but couldn’t replace it. I’m gutted really. I loved having that matching pair, the simple shape and more than anything I liked that it was just private to me, done without fuss or drama or anyone else knowing really why they were there.
Maddy tried to fix it for me, because Maddy is lovely and hates upset. She did her best.
So the mended one stays for now and along side it the silly shapes, in honour of what Christmas should be about. Smiling.
Difficult.
Popcorn & Cranberry Christmas Craft
The morning is best drawn a veil over for now but while I stomped off in a huff, the girls made gingerbread. We ate it all, so perhaps we’ll add a photo of more tomorrow and Fran has promised to send me the link. We can go for an edit then
(And here it is!)

This afternoon the girls threaded popcorn and cranberries and as we didn’t want to add more to the tree, we edged shelves with them. They look rather lovely.
Actually, there was also more pompom making and some banner making too today – I’ll blog those tomorrow I hope.
Christmas Hama Beads Craft
Well, if I’m honest, we’ve not done it but here is a whole batch of Christmas Hama Bead Patterns from days of yore, with a special appearance by “Santiclors” designed by a very young Gwenny.

Make a Fireplace Christmas Craft
Or how to make sure Father Christmas can get into your house if you don’t have a chimney.
In our slightly nomadic past, which ended abruptly almost 5 years ago when we bought this house, we always managed to rent houses with chimneys, making it nice and easy for the great man to access the establishment for the servicing of stockings (I think it best not to tell you that Amelie prefers to wear pyjamas on Christmas Eve in case Santa checks her bottom to make sure it is clean
)
Since moving to our lovely but middle range, modern matchbox, we no longer have chimneys. I maintain, and I’m convinced I’m right, this is of no importance and that the skylight above their rooms is almost certainly quite enough for him to use the required magic to make it in.
Apparently Maddy thinks not.
There you go Santa. No problem now.
Christmas Characters Pom Pom Craft
We’re busy here, doing better than you might think at enjoying each others company and being together. After being hectically busy, trade pretty much stopped when the Daily Mail started banging on about the weather so I was able to come home and be with the kids and Max hasn’t been so stretched either. We bumbled away the weekend, thankful to have one without manic rushing about, but yesterday we did lots of pompom making.
I bought these kits from Baker Ross and they were a big success. The best thing actually is the pompom circles in them, thick card with a slit in them which makes the winding very easy and they reuse well too. I might by more for spares as I think they are better than I could be bothered to cut out tbh!
I’ve bought reusable ones before and they were not so good; the Djeco Pom Pom Set we sell is very popular and I’m intrigued by this enough to want to buy it! And yes, I know that you can just cut card ones out, I just used to hate doing it, though I realised many years later that the reason the scissors hurt so much was that I used right handed ones; unfortunately, having learned to cut using them, I can’t use left handed ones, so now I’m stuck with the pain!
Anyway, the Baker Ross sets look like this when done and are a bit gorgeous and cute.
It’s sparked a bit of a craze here too, particularly in view of a remembered window decoration at Monsoon a year or two back so we’ve been making some to string together in a chain. Walked past their window today and they were reusing them. They look very lovely and it is a pleasantly communal, companionable, craft.
Christmas Wreaths & Fimo Xmas Shapes
A couple of weeks ago I did a round up of some Christmas craft ideas, when I still had hope we’d replicate last years happy Christmas crafty month.
We’ve not quite achieved that so far, but there is still time and we finally made a start on it on Monday, yesterday and today – thank heavens for kind friends who take over mothering for me; at least this does mean they’ve done some stuff, even if not all of it with me so far.
Monday they spent with Zoe and her girls and so craft #1 was pudding making which were boiled today and smelt as lovely as ever. I’m not sure if they did 2 or 3 things there – I know craft #2 was Fimo decorations. Maddy did an awesome Christmas tree which she is going to dictate instructions to me for (it is built around a cocktail stick) and Amelie did an unintentionally rather rude angel.
(I’m still reeling from her announcement today that she doesn’t wear nighties on Xmas Eve in case FC checks under the duvet to see if her bottom is clean
)
I’m perpetually disappointed by not getting enough done in the run up to Xmas – I always want to be so much more inventive than I am.
Yesterday we went to see the Beans and there was much fun and frolicking. They made minty chocolate with sprinkles (we did this last year with dark chocolate and extra strong mints but when at the home a a veggie or 4, we used polos) Very yummy. That was craft #3 – I think we’ll do that again too it we have time.
Then they raided the garden for greenery and we spent a happy couple of hours twisting wreaths together; they were all very different and all very gorgeous. We came home with 2 for the house and one for a staff member who the girls see a lot of and who was very pleased with it.

(I’ve lost my camera totally, forgive the cruddy phone pics.)
So wreaths were craft #4. I l do love having a fresh one on the door; suits my more earth based winter festive feelings much better.
The quick lantern and star colouring craft was #5 – they all liked that.
Then this #6 turned out to be surprisingly satisfying; we bought some florist wires and cut them in half to make lengths of about 5 inches; bend one end over into a loop, then thread 12ish pony beads or plastic shaped beads on to them, make another 2 the same, twist the 3 together in the middle and hang up as a decoration.
Skye did a lovely one with 4 stalks – my children were more random with their colours but very happy with them. I think, with gold wires and glass beads, they’d look completely gorgeous actually but all the kids, from 12 down to 6, enjoyed making them. I think they’d be good with Hama Beads too actually.
The girls and I have done more today; I’ll blog those tomorrow when hopefully I can find the camera. But at least we’re being creative now.
