Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Failed drug trial patient comes out of coma
“The Medical Research Council, which is currently running more than 350 drug trials, said there had been a surge of interest from people keen to take part in trials and inquiring about the payments volunteers can receive, following adverse coverage of the events at Northwick Park.”
I think the paragraph picked out here just illustrates to me that the world is full of people who react VERY differently to things. I’m fairly sure this particular event was enough to make quite certain *I* would *never* take part in a trial, but then… i’m a scare-di-cat!

Its amazing what a motivator money can be isnt it? However I agree with you, following the recent events I would not be joining the que to take part in any drug trials.

I’m with you all the way with this Merry, ie: who on earth would take such a risk, save for the seriously suicidal who may well skew the results anyway, – and I personally wouldn’t vaguely contemplate most clinical trials that involve actually swallowing something..

People will sell themselves for very little – students mainly who think they are indestructable and have never been ill so do not fear it. When they are older they will always ask “I wonder if that drug caused THIS”, but such is our need for money we will literally sell ourselves because we have no higher values to restrain us.
I very nearly did it as a student. Glad I didn’t.
